Preserve Your Tooth With Root Canal Therapy

When decay advances to the soft inner tissue of a tooth, it results in an infection that can only be resolved in one of two ways: extraction or a root canal. Our doctors regularly perform root canal therapy at our Miami, FL clinic. While the phrase “root canal” is often associated with pain, advanced techniques make the procedure virtually painless. In fact, it is often described as being no more uncomfortable than receiving a dental filling.

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is an effective treatment that prevents more serious dental problems. Patients who undergo root canal therapy can benefit from:

  • Virtually painless treatment: Our doctors will use local anesthesia so you experience minimal discomfort during the treatment. For patients who are especially sensitive or anxious, we offer sedation.
  • Preservation of your tooth: An infected tooth that goes untreated will eventually need to be extracted. By undergoing root canal therapy at an early enough stage, the exterior of your tooth can be preserved so that it can continue to help you chew and speak.
  • Prevention of more serious problems: Infections inevitably spread. An untreated cavity or advanced decay can compromise the health of surround teeth and dental tissue.

Am I a Candidate for Root Canal Therapy?

Individuals who have an advanced cavity may notice symptoms that range from toothache and temperature sensitivity to swelling and bad breath. Candidates for root canal therapy often have pain emanating from one tooth, or swelling of the tissues near the tooth.

If you are experiencing any symptoms of a dental infection, call us right away and we can arrange to see you as soon as possible. If a tooth cannot be saved, we offer treatments such as implant-supported restorations that can completely replace the tooth.

A Look at the Procedure

Local anesthesia will be used to ensure that no pain can be perceived at the surgical site. We can also provide sedation upon request. Once you are comfortable and your infected tooth is completely numb, an access point will be created near the top of your tooth.

A root canal involves the complete removal of soft tissues from within the tooth.

Next, all nerves and soft tissue will be removed from the inside of your tooth, including the inner channels of the tooth roots (the root canals). Any decayed hard tissue will also be removed at this time. The inside of the tooth will be disinfected and filled with a rubber-like substance, and a post may be inserted into one or more of your root canals to provide structural support. After the access point is sealed, we will take an impression of the tooth, which will be used to create a dental crown.

While the phrase “root canal” is often associated with pain, advanced techniques make the procedure virtually painless.

Creating a permanent crown takes about two weeks, but we can provide a temporary dental crown to wear in the meantime. Once your permanent crown is ready, we will schedule a second appointment to finish restoring your tooth.
