Implant-Supported Dentures: A Stable Solution for Tooth Loss
Significant tooth loss can have a tremendous negative impact on your appearance. Most importantly, however, those missing several or all of their teeth are far more susceptible to other oral health issues, such as shifting, mobility, and even further tooth loss. Fortunately, our doctors at Beautiful Smiles by Design in Miami, FL, offer implant-supported dentures as a stable teeth replacement option. Rather than rest atop the gums, these prostheses are attached to dental implants, which are anchored firmly in the jaw.
For over 40 years, our practice has been serving individuals and families in our community. With a focus on comprehensive care, our team can perform every aspect of dental implant treatment in one convenient location.
Benefits of Implant-Supported Restorations
One of the most significant advantages of implant-supported dentures is the stability they provide. While traditional dentures can shift, slip, or wobble, implant-supported appliances stay put until removed by the patient. Furthermore, patients who choose this option are able to enunciate more clearly and eat their favorite foods with confidence.
In addition to convenience and stability, implant-supported dentures also offer oral health benefits. Because dental implants mimic natural tooth roots, the jawbone continues to receive stimulation. This preserves the existing bone tissue and reduces the risk of bone degradation in the future.
Who Is Eligible for Implant-Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures are generally recommended for those who have sustained substantial tooth loss. Many individuals seeking this treatment have worn traditional dentures for several years, and are looking to upgrade and stabilize their appliances. To qualify for this type of treatment, patients should:
- Have adequate jawbone density
- Be free from decay, gum disease, and other serious oral health issues
- Be in good general health, free from any conditions that could hinder the healing process
- Not smoke or use tobacco products
- Be committed to routine dental visits and excellent at-home oral hygiene
The Treatment Process
Before receiving dental implants, some patients may require extractions, bone grafting, or other preparatory treatments. These procedures often require several months of recovery but may be necessary to ensure a strong foundation. Once the jawbone is ready, Dr. Judith Lubin, our board-certified periodontist, surgically places the implants. A temporary denture may be provided at this time. In most cases, it takes three to six months for the posts to fully fuse with the jawbone. This process is known as osseointegration, and it is necessary for the stability of your new restoration.
With a focus on comprehensive care, our team can perform every aspect of dental implant treatment in one convenient location.
After the healing period, impressions are taken of your bite. These molds are then sent to a trusted dental lab for the fabrication of your final appliance. Once your denture is complete, we will schedule you for another appointment. During this visit, your doctor will try in your new prosthesis, assess the fit and appearance, and provide detailed guidelines for appropriate care. As a member of the International Congress of Oral Implantology, Dr. Roy Greenberg strives to deliver the most natural-looking and long-lasting results possible.
